Nose Flutes

Kalinga nose flute

Perhaps nothing is as haunting as the sound of a nose flute played in the early morning or evening.  The instrument is primarily played by young men to woo a maiden.  It is also the instrument of choice to pass away the time.

Made from a single node of a slender bamboo, a small hole is bored at one node while the other is end if left open.  To play the flute, the flute is positioned so that the hole is directly below one nostril.  The other  nostril is usually plugged with a piece of leaf to enable the other one to blow more air. The finger holes are usually positioned on the instrument according to the natural position of the player’s fingers on the flute.
